There are many reasons for relining a denture. A common need is often due to gradual changes of the soft tissues and underlying bone. Other causes may be inaccuracies of fit, loss of further supporting teeth plus many others.
Your denture may need a reline if it moves excessively when you chew or talk, if you get food beneath it after eating or if it is generally uncomfortable and you’ve not been able to get used to it.
Should you require it, there are two different ways to reline a denture with important differences:
The former has classically been an inadequate long-term fix, the materials are inferior to laboratory processed materials and the chair time can be excessive. This is why in the majority of cases, the preferred protocol for many practices is a laboratory made reline. This usually requires your dentist to take an impression of your mouth and send off your denture to a laboratory for several days.
This can be a real challenge if you don’t have a spare set of false teeth!
The huge benefit of seeing a clinical dental technician (CDT) for a denture reline is that you can obtain the preferred option 2 in a matter of hours. The same impression will be required, but the reline can be carried out in the in-house laboratory without any delay. Therefore, you get an excellent long-term fix for your ill fitting denture. A perfect solution to avoid parting with your denture for days.
