Dentures have always carried a stigma that often conjures an image of an uncomfortable and unnatural looking appliance worn by the elderly. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Over 11 million people in the UK have dentures. And here at Smiles and More we want to help patients overcome any preconceptions they may have towards false teeth.
The biggest misconception about dentures is that they’re only for your grandparents. In fact, people of all ages are known to wear either complete or partial dentures. Your favourite rugby player, boxer or jockey in their twenties or thirties may very likely be wearing a set of partial dentures.
One example of a guy you may not expect to be wearing a denture is former Warrington Wolves star Anthony England. He was all smiles after leaving Smiles and More.
Another mistaken belief is that people associate dentures with dental neglect. But, teeth can be lost when accidents happen! Along with this people can be born with dental conditions. Or develop oral problems later in life that the majority of people are lucky to avoid. All of these misconceptions lead to secrecy. Many will hide the fact they wear dentures not only with friends and colleagues, but also with their loved ones! But this doesn’t need to be the case.
The truth is that dentures should be seen just like implants, veneers and crowns which the majority of people would be happy to discuss their experience of. Dentures are a fabulous way of recreating a beautiful and natural smile to at least the standard that was there before. If not much better!
Kalin Jax has created a YouTube channel which documents her journey with dentures; you can watch her videos here.
If the average denture looked like Jalin’s, then people would be proud of the smile that their dentures have given them! Peoples’ complex relationship with dentures and food; their intimate relationships; and the perceived limitations on their careers is based on the classic story of your grandma having her teeth removed aged 20. And still wearing the denture she had made then at aged 80! Of course, this will be loose and unattractive looking. And completely unfit for purpose.
However, denture making is now the most creative form of cosmetic dentistry. And clinics like Smiles and More rebuild your smile to the highest standard. Giving you back not only beautiful aesthetics, but a comfortable bite that won’t let you down.
Just a few examples of celebrities that look great with dentures are Janice Dickinson and Joe Biden. We see a need to make a positive shift in peoples’ belief systems about wearing dentures because quality dentures can be the difference between patients smiling with pride or hiding in shame.
We need people to speak out about their dentures and experience thereof as we begin to abolish the stigma toward one of the most versatile means of tooth replacement. If you have a story you would be happy to share with us, please get in touch!
